Femi Barbie?

A few notes, after watching Barbie and the video below. Spoilers.

Some of the problems, this video talks about:

  • Everything happens very quickly, there’s no time for serious thought.
  • There’s serious stuff, but it’s not taken seriously, maybe.
  • Too much Ken.
  • Barbie only experiences bad things in the real world.
  • The Mattell boys actually don’t change the plot.
  • We know too little about the mother. Show us her problems.
  • The daughter bonds with her mother too fast.
  • Imagine if the conclusion to the talk of motherhood would be a pregnant Barbie. In the end there’s too little about motherhood.
  • No intersectionality. (We don’t hear about problems related to skin color, handicaps etc.)
  • The “<something smart>, OMG, I said something smart” joke is old and tired.
  • While the Barbies mainly ignored the Kens, the Kens actually mistreat the Barbies later.

I was curious about what a nuanced review would say. I’m not sure I agree with all of this, but I find it interesting.
